Video

Hey guys! Sorry for the long bout of silence! I’m back from FanimeCon 2012 in San Jose, and I come bearing a video copy of our skit from the Cosplay Spectacular! We’re extremely proud of this production, and we put our heart and soul into this, and busted our asses to get it done, polished, and worthy of Fanime’s wonderful audience.

Convention report coming soon!

You Know You’re a Cosplayer When…

…Every series or movie you watch, every comic you read, every video game you play, you wonder which character you would cosplay, even if you never plan to do so.

Hey everyone! I’ve finally gotten around to cleaning out my wigs, and now a whole bunch of them have been posted for sale over on the cosplay.com market place. Please have a look, tell your friends, and help me get all these wigs out of my closet! I need space for new stuff!

Also still for sale is my Ciel Phantomhive costume!

Hey guys! Since NOTN is officially listed on KumoriCon’s website, I figured it was time to give OUR site an overhaul. I updated basically EVERY PAGE, and changed the layout, so go check it out!

I posted a version of this over on my Facebook, so for those of you who don’t know how to reply on tumblr (like me) you can go weigh in at this link: https://www.facebook.com/sumikinscosplay

If I were to cosplay a Disney Princess, which do you think I’d be more suited for? Cinderella, Belle (in her pink dress), or Snow White? In all cases, I would be going film-accurate with the color schemes… I just can’t decide. Also, if there’s someone you think I’d be better as, please suggest.

Well, here she is. My new baby — A Singer 5500 Fashion Mate. I’ll admit, I’m kind of surprised at myself, since I ended up not only shelling out more than I had planned to initially, but also went with a Singer instead of a Brother, and also wound up springing for the electronic when I had previously decided on a manual. There’s a story behind it.
I did all my my pre-shopping online, on Walmart’s website. I had already decided that I would be buying my new machine from Walmart, because I had a 50 dollar gift card for there. After running all the way to Salem (an hour-long drive) and checking their store, I find out that they do not carry the machine I had decided on. So, I pull out my phone, and use their website to locate the nearest store that DOES carry the one I had decided on (A little manual Brother priced at about 80 bucks) and find that the only store within 50 miles that carries it, is the one closest to my apartment. Talk about Irony. So, I finished my business in town, and then drove north, arriving at around 10-minutes-to-10PM. I wander into their sewing section, only to find the website has lied to me, and they do not carry this machine either. I was so mad! Now, I was faced with a dilemma; I could either order the machine online and wait for it to arrive, or, I could chose a different machine. After driving all over several county’s, I wasn’t in the mood to wait for a new machine to arrive in the mail; I elected to start my process over, and buy one of the machines they had in stock. This left me with the option of 2 machines of a lower grade than the one I already owned, the Brother ‘Project Runway’ machine from my previous post, the Singer Fashion Mate, and two other machines that I immediately ruled out due to price, and the fact that I didn’t want an embroidery machine, or a quilting machine. So really, it was down to two: the Project Runway, or the Fashion Mate. The Project Runway machine was 40 dollars cheaper, and I’ve heard good things about it… but I couldn’t help thinking “you get what you pay for”. In the end, it was the advertised ‘Heavy Duty Metal Frame’ that sold me, and I grabbed the only remaining Singer Fashion Mate, and took it home with me. I spent the better part of the day packing some more things in my office/craft room, and ultimately getting my space all cleared, before I set up the machine.
It went together very quickly and smoothly, and from what little I’d tested, runs like a dream. So quiet, and smooth! I don’t think I’ll end up using the decorative stitches on it, though I must admit that having them make me want to do decorative stitching for all my hems. Maybe someday, I’ll find a use for them.
So now begins the adventure of learning to use my new machine. Is it dumb that I want to name her? I think I’ll call her Patricia, after my Nana. <3 Only fitting, since I learned to sew on HER Singer, don’t ya think?

Change of Plans - KatsuCon, Here I Come!

That’s right, after agonizing over it for quite some time, I decided at the last minute to drop the money on a plane ticket, and get my butt to KatsuCon in National Harbor, MD! Initially, I had decided not to attend, thinking that I would be moving, and have lots of moving costs. So far, that just hasn’t come together, so I figure it’s the Universe’s way fo telling me that I’m supposed to go!

I will be largely spending my time particpating in Judging for the World Cosplay Summit Preliminaries, and I couldn’t be more excited for that! Unfortunately, since it’s such a last miute decision, I’m not going to be able to bring anything new, or sadly, anything that really stands up to the gorgeous venue the convention is hosted at. I’m ging to start on something, but it may or may not got done, so I’m ot holding my breath.

For the moment, it looks like I’ll just be bringing Homura (School Form) and Mytho (Fancy-Prince Version! — though minus the sword)

I’m disappointed I don’t have anything cooler to bring with me, but I’ll just have to suck it up. Either way, I’m looking forward to seeing al of this years contestants up close, and egtting to spend time with some friends, as well as finally meet some people I’ve only spoken to online!

Flights are booked, and I’ll be arriving at 9AM on Friday Morning, and departing DC at 2:45PM on Sunday. Now, I just need to figure out transportation to the airport(s) and back… :D

Guys…. I have a new dream costume. It would be the most hideous, shiny, gaudy thing I’ve ever made. And mostly, I want to make that headpiece. Sequins everywhere. Satin Taffeta. applique and satin stitching, and OHGODSOMEONESTOPME.

When your Cosplay Mess keeps you from being productive…

I have come to the realization that Friday Nights will never, ever be productive cosplay-time for me. Invariably, I come home from work on Friday nights, so tired, that I end up crashing either on my couch or bed around 5:30, sleeping until 9-ish, and then find it completley impossible to get my head in the game for anything creative.

So, instead, I need to focus on simply cleaning my space, so that I will have an ideal work environment when I actually have the brain power for it. I don’t know about you guys, but having a cluttered, messy space, makes it really hard for me to focus and get any of my work done; it’s a major crunch on my creativity. Yet somehow, when my space is clean, all I want to do is get down on the floor, and start making things — and subsequently, make a mess again. What is it about a clean space that makes us want to make it a mess, and messes that make us want to clean?

I certainly don’t have the answer. But I do know I need to get off my ass and finish CLEANING. I want to come home to a clean space, ready to work after the holidays. Only about 2 weeks ‘til ALA…

✰ 2011 Year-in-Review + 2012 Plans ✰

Another year gone, and another entry spent looking back at the ups, downs, and general mayhem of cosplay antics from the last 12 months. I somehow managed to do a lot in 2011, and yet at the same time, not a lot at all.

This is going to be rather long, and heavy on the videos and photos, so I’ll save your dashboards:

CHRNO COSTUME FOR SALE

batcosplay:

http://www.cosplay.com/marketplace/showproduct.php/product/57972/cat/500

Guys, I’ve held this costume in my hands, and even tried on the coat. It’s wonderfully made, and the stretch sateen makes for a great fit — and I can tell you, Kayla and I are NOT the same size (I am taller, and thicker around the ribcage and waist), so that says something about the costume’s comfort and wear-ability. This is a GREAT DEAL, so if you don’t want it, forward it on to someone else who might!

E is for Edward Elric
I made this costume back at the beginning of 2007, to go with Rynn’s Al costume. This was before we formulated our plans for a larger FMA: Conqueror of Shamballa group. This was my first cross-play, and I was rather pleased that I was moderately convincing. This costume was worn to SakuraCon 2007, the first GasuKan (A Seattle-Area Cosplay Gathering), and then never again. I sold it last year, and although I’d hoped to see some pictures from the buyer, never received any.
This photo was taken in Sept/October of 2007 as Gasworks Park in Seattle, WA — photographer is my buddy Vince (Darkain).
Random Fact: While I don’t consider this to be a very flattering photograph of myself, it’s still one of my favorites of this costume.

It’s Official — I’ll be attending Anime Los Angeles for the first time this Januaray!

I booked my flights, and got the time off work… now it’s down to the crunch time! If everything goes off without a hitch, these are the costumes I’ll be bringing!

  • Homura Akemi — School Form — Madoka Magica
  • Homura Akemi — Magical Girl Form — Madoka Magica
  • Maka Albarn — Soul Eater
  • Mytho — School Form — Princess Tutu

School Homura and School Mytho are all finished, and Magical-Girl Homura has my top Priority. Maka is about 3/4 done, so she should be happening too! I jsut have to really bust my ass!

I’m really looking forward to attending a new convention, and getting a chance to spend more time with some of my CA friends, and those I only manage to see in passing at Fanime. I’ve heard good things about ALA, so I’m SUPER excited, even if the venue isn’t that great. It’ll be nice to kick off my con-year early!

So… I’ve loved these designs for a long time. Just throwing this out there… anyone interested in doing a group of these? Someday? Maybe?

The artist is YoukaiYume on DeviantArt — I love her stuff, and you should all go check it out!

D is for Dare and Dance Central!
Probably one of the silliest, off-the-cuff groups I’ve ever been a part of, but I’d be a liar if I said I didn’t love every minute of it.  This particular photo was actually featured on the official facebook page for Dance Central!  It features my friends Chris (as Mo), Mandy (as Oblio), Kayla (as Ms. Aubrey), Rynn (as Emilia) and Rey (as Angel).  and of course, myself as Dare (the one with the neon pink hair for those not in the loop). If I thought any of my friends would be down with wearing these again, I’d be all over fixing up this costume; so much of it was an experiment gone wrong, and I know I’m capable of so much better.  Still, I think everyone’s moving on to Dance Central 2 which, sadly, Dare was cut from.  ;_;
This photo was taken by Lionel at SakuraCon 2011, and also features our awesome Boombox. Yeah~!
